Selling a Boat

Home / Selling a Boat

We've put together some useful advice about selling your boat with Bray Marine Sales. Take a look through the process and if you have any questions or would like to contact us with regards to the sale of your boat, please use the Quick Enquiry Form.

Boat Value and Specification

Establish a Value
All our sales staff have extensive knowledge and experience in this area and would welcome the opportunity to view and appraise your boat.

Boat Specification
A boat specification sheet is prepared for display in our sales offices and handed to prospective purchasers visiting our sites; this lists all the poignant selling features and includes external and internal photographs; our customer research suggests that prospective purchasers respond more positively when provided with as much visual imagery as possible.

Marketing and Negotiations

Marketing the Vessel
All boats are uploaded to our website and all major boat sales portals.

We would recommend that your boat be moved to our dedicated sales pontoon and, ideally, she should arrive clean and clear of all personal effects prior to display. Bray Marine Sales employs a boat cleaner who ensures that all boats are presented in the best possible way during her 'for sale' period.

Each boat is then closely matched with enquiries/prospects already on our database.

Negotiations
All sales negotiations will be handled on your behalf.

We would ask that all relevant and legal paperwork is handed to us to ensure clear and proper Title can be passed on; this includes:

  • Proof of VAT
  • Bills of Sale (at least 5 years)
  • Conformity with the Recreational Craft Directive
  • If applicable, the vessel's Part I registration

Once a Sale Price has been agreed by you we will draw up a Sales Contract (produced by the British Marine Federation) this is prepared in close consultation with both vendor and purchaser, and covers timescales, deposits, trials, surveys, acceptance clauses and completion; at this point we normally request a 10% Deposit to be paid into our dedicated client bank account.

Following the signing of the contract and payment of a deposit, a Boat Demonstration is arranged with the buyer which we undertake on your behalf; following a satisfactory trial a survey date is then arranged. Should the buyer currently own a boat, we consider a Part Exchange in order to bring the sale process to a speedy conclusion. Once the purchaser receives the survey report we will explain in detail any points raised and recommendations made. Depending on the findings of this report, the purchaser may wish to renegotiate his offer; we will advise you on how to proceed in this instance.

This process from offer acceptance to clearing of balance funds - will generally take between 7 to 28 days.

And Finally

Once the purchaser agrees to purchase the vessel we will, within the contractual time frame, collect the balance on your behalf and, upon clearance we will make any necessary disbursements and transfer the sales proceeds into your designated bank account. A handover will then be arranged on your behalf and we will pass on all the Title paperwork to the new owner.

Now is the time to pop the Champagne cork!
